Overview

The 2025 Rivian R1S is the SUV version of the R1T β€” sharing its electric platform while adding a third row. It is the most capable electric 3-row SUV available globally, combining off-road performance with family practicality.

It competes with the Cadillac Escalade IQ, Tesla Model X, and BMW iX β€” winning on off-road capability and towing. It loses on luxury interior refinement vs. the Escalade IQ.

Adventure SUV

The R1S is the choice for families who want the capability of a Wrangler, the space of a Suburban, and the running costs of an EV. No single competitor from any brand offers all three simultaneously.

Range & Efficiency

Real-World Data

WHILE TOWING

Large Pack EPA ~352 miles; at 70 mph expect ~274 miles. Cold reduces range ~15%. Towing at max capacity reduces range 45–55%. Always plan charging stops on long towing trips.

Range vs Escalade IQ

Rivian R1S Max Pack: 410 miles. Cadillac Escalade IQ: ~450 miles estimated. Both are class-leading. R1S wins on towing (11,000 vs ~7,000 lb) and off-road. Escalade IQ wins on luxury interior and brand prestige.

The R1S shares the R1T's battery options. Max Pack delivers 410 miles EPA β€” the longest range of any electric SUV globally. DC fast charging at 200 kW adds ~140 miles in 20 minutes. NACS is standard.

05

3-Row Interior & Cargo

Storage Everywhere

Unlike traditional SUVs, the R1S has a front trunk (frunk) plus the main cargo area. Combined with the flat-floor fold, the R1S can haul more than its exterior size suggests.

Three rows seat 7 passengers. Maximum cargo with all rows folded reaches 105.6 cubic feet β€” more than the Chevy Suburban (144 cu ft only because Suburban is full-size). For a mid-size electric SUV, 105.6 cu ft is exceptional.

Second-row seats fold into the floor; third-row access is practical for regular use.

06

Off-Road Capability

14.9-inch Clearance

The R1S has more ground clearance than the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon (10.8 inches) and the Defender 110 (11.5 inches). Combined with locking diffs and wade mode, it is one of the most capable production off-road SUVs globally.

Air suspension with 14.9 inches of ground clearance β€” more than any production SUV gas or electric. Locking differentials front and rear are standard. Wade mode enables water crossings up to 34 inches.

The R1S competes with Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk and Land Rover Defender for serious off-road capability, but adds 410-mile range and 7 seats.

07

Reliability

R1S reliability mirrors the R1T β€” significantly improved since the 2022 launch, but still below established luxury SUV brands. 2023+ production recommended.
